How Insane Are Your Beliefs About Money?
Jul 25
If you’re like me, some of your beliefs about money are crazy.
Want to prove it to yourself? take this test.
In your community:
1. Rich people are: ____________________________________________________
2. Poor people are: ____________________________________________________
3. Successful business people are: __________________________________________
4. Capitalism is: ______________________________________________________
Now think about how you spend money:
1. If I buy something on sale I feel: ___________________________________________________________
2. When I think about spending money on my own needs I feel: ________________________________________
3. When I buy things for myself, I feel: _________________________________________________________
4. If I have extra money I __________________________________________________________________
Now think about how you feel about business success:
1. When I think about succeeding in my business I feel: _____________________________________________
Here are some answers to the questions above (names redacted to protect the insane):
Rich People are: Lucky, greedy, unreliable, out of my league, generous, inaccessible, they never worry about money, harried, perfect, happy.
When I think about succeeding in my business I feel: hopeless, giddy, wrong, it seems impossible, who do I think I am.
When I buy something on sale I feel: righteous. I beat the system. I’m smarter than other people. I will sacrifice actually liking the thing for buying it on sale. It’s better to get something on sale that you don’t like than it is to buy something for full price that you do like.
How do your beliefs compare?
Unfortunately, even though I wrote these questions and “know better,” I am the proud owner of my own set of insane beliefs. I’ve written them down, and interestingly, some of them seem to be receding since they’ve been exposed. What do your beliefs look like? What do you do when you see them in all their glory? Comment below.

Wonderful, thoughtful questions to help me get clear about my insane beliefs about money. It’s not easy to look at, but its the first step in healing faulty thinking. Thanks for the quiz! I’m going to present it to my biz plan group that is working through your book.Blessings to you!
Thanks for having the courage to do it!
The blanks above could not be filled in, so I’m posting the answers here:
In your community:
1. philanthropists
2. without financial resources
3. rare
4. one way to make a living
Now think about how you spend money:
1. okay—don’t usually buy things on sale
2. grateful that I have it to spend
3. happy
4. If I have extra money I share it. However, I have not been successful at saving it.
Now think about how you feel about business success:
1. that it might be possible.
I was surprised at both how sane most of my answers were and that I have the belief that successful business people are rare. Very interesting.
